Lipator | Lipitor - An Introduction
Lipator, or liptor, is a common mis-spelling of the brand Lipitor, a product of Pfizer Inc.
Lipator is a member of a group of drugs collectively known as statins, which are HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors. HMG-CoA reductase is an enzyme involved in the synthesis of cholesterol in the liver. What lipator does is to block the action of this enzyme, and thus cholesterol production is inhibited.
Lipator is atorvastatin calcium. It is a white crystalline powder, and is sold in tablets of 10mg, 20mg, 40mg and 80mg.
Studies show that Lipator lowers levels of cholesterol by inhibiting the action of HMG CoA reductase which is essential for the production of cholesterol in the liver, and also by reducing the production of LDL cholesterol or bad cholesterol, and enhancing the uptake and breakdown of LDL in the cells.

Raised total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels are associated with an increased rate of deposition of cholesterol in the inner lining of blood vessels and subsequent narrowing of these vessels. Nowhere is this more significant than in the blood vessels supplying the heart and the brain.
Most people with mildly raised cholesterol levels respond well to a 10mg dosage of Lipator daily. It is important that dietary modification be also encouraged to help in this lowering. Regular monitoring of blood cholesterol levels is also important as a high cholesterol does not cause any symptoms, and the only way one can tell if the cholesterol level in his blood is high is to do blood tests, initially to diagnose the problem, and later regularly after dietary modification and regular Lipator.
